CNU JUNIOR BROADCASTERS' ALLIANCE LAUNCH ITS 1ST SESSION OF SIBYA WEBINAR SERIES

Updated: Sep 12, 2021

CNU Junior Broadcasters' Alliance aired its first session of a three-day webinar series via Zoom and Facebook live, September 10, 2021 at 1:30 pm in celebration of the Broadcaster's Month and Press Freedom Week.

With the theme "Maximizing Social Media Use in Amplifying Truth," Shiela Mae Gumapon, the media admin officer of Basilica Minore del Santo Niño Media Center, served as the speaker of the said event.

"Sometimes we have to be very careful also because social media is powerful. Once you posted something, it's already there. You can delete it after, but we never know if someone took a screenshot or shared your post.", she said during the webinar.

The speaker emphasized social media as an influential tool that can affect one's mental health; however, it can also be a source of income, livelihood, and entertainment.

The webinar included an open table discussion in which virtual attendees could ask questions to the speaker.

"Sometimes we cannot unfollow or unfriend these people because you're afraid that they might get back at you. At the end of the day, you have to think of yourself. Do you have that peace of mind still?" Ms. Gumapon's response about the question on unfollowing toxic Facebook friends.

Dr. Joseph Elvir Tubilan, chairman of the Department of Communication and Media Studies in CNU, was endorsed by the Cebu City Press Council to become the representative of the Philippines in the International Training for Media Development in Sweden and Denmark next year.

The 2nd webinar will be on September 17, 2021, via Zoom and Facebook live with the topic, "Students as the fact-checking detectives."
